Dressing Up Your Man: Pairing the right SHOES with the right SUIT

Let’s be honest here. Who among you dresses up your man on formal occasions? I love my husband to death and will let him dress however he wants on regular days, because I want him to be comfortable and most like himself.

For special events however that require a suit, such as for weddings this past summer, I often give him a bit of help. He knows that by my doing so, I care about him and want him to look as presentable as possible! It helps with his confidence too, because people often approach well dressed men with more respect.

Men’s fashion tends to get the short end of the stick, perhaps unfairly! While fashion for us women tends to be much broader and offers a much more diverse range of style options, men’s wardrobes tend to offers an array of variations on the ‘jeans and a t-shirt’ motif. While it can make life easier, it’s also pretty dull! Of course, these day’s men’s fashion is becoming more prominent and there are more choices available, allowing men to explore their sartorial side and smarten up their wardrobes for a more modern sense of style. And we’re not just talking about clothes; accessories such as shoes are all key to creating an elegant, memorable look.

Nothing makes your man feel more sophisticated, fashion-wise, than a well-fitting suit, but what sort of shoes should he wear? Men’s shoes come in a variety of colors, materials and designs, but it’s also a fact that wearing the wrong type of shoes with a certain suit can be something of a faux pas.

Men’s shoes tend to have three color families: black, brown and burgundy, though there are other colors. Here are some helpful tips for pairing the right shoes with the right suit.

Different Color Suits, Different Color Shoes: Formal and Professional Dress for Men

Navy

Navy suits go well with all three color groups, but the color of your shoes can say more about you than the suit itself. If you’re going for a formal, business look, then black leather shoes (such as stylish wingtips) are the best bet. However, soft browns and burgundies can transform the suit into something more casual, suitable for a night out or socializing.

Browns

Heed this advice and never, ever wear black shoes with a brown suit. Brown shoes tend to go well with brown suits, and ideally you want to find a shade of brown that separates the suit from the shoes and creates a noticeable contrast, so go for a darker leather for an eye catching look.

Grey

Grey suits are generally seen as less formal than something like black or navy, and the neutral colour means that the suit is more flexible for different uses. As ever, black leather shoes create a suitable business look, whereas the burgundy, reddish colors can make you appear more fun and relaxed.

Black

Black suits can come across as severe and funereal, but they’re also authoritative and striking. Unlike grey suits, black lacks flexibility and the recommendation is to always wear black shoes. Any other colour of shoe makes the suit look to casual, and given that they tend to be reserved for funerals and similar events.
